Sleep is essential for rejuvenating our minds and bodies. However, many struggle with sleep disorders, affecting about half of the adult population in the UK. Insomnia, characterized by persistent sleep problems such as difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep, can significantly impact health if untreated. Causes include psychological issues like stress and anxiety, and physical problems like chronic pain. Increased nervous system activity is also linked to insomnia.
Self-help methods to improve sleep include avoiding caffeine before bed, regular exercise, and warm baths. When ineffective, people often use sleeping pills, which can lose effectiveness and have side effects. Acupuncture is a recommended alternative, impacting the nervous system and promoting relaxation. A systematic review by Huang W found acupuncture effective in improving sleep quality, onset, and duration, with benefits lasting up to 3.5 years without side effects, unlike sleeping pills.
